Thermal conductivity of polar firn

چکیده

Abstract The vast Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets are covered by many tens of meters polar firn, which is snow that years to centuries old has experienced significant metamorphism. Both ice-sheet modeling decoding satellite data require knowledge the thermal conductivity firn with depth, yet direct measurements not available for depths below top several meters. We present first effective over down 48 m. A custom guarded hot plate been designed constructed, validation this device using materials known presented. Using validated device, were made on core samples spanning from 4 m an undisturbed site near South Pole, Antarctica. Results show at Pole increases depth density. surface well-explained as a function density relationship k ( ρ ) = 0.144 e 0.00308· z 0.536 0.0144· . associated diffusivities range 19.0 28.5 2 -1

Variable Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Radiation Effect on the Motion of a Micro Polar Fluid over an Upper Surface

The intent of this analysis is to explore the influence of thermal radiation paired with variable thermal conductivity on MHD micropolar fluid flow over an upper surface. The novelty of the present model is to consider the fluid flow along an upper horizontal surface of a paraboloid of revolution (uhspr) with the porous medium.  This physical phenomenon is described by a set of coupled...

Thermal fractionation of air in polar firn by seasonal temperature gradients

[1] Abstract: Air withdrawn from the top 5–15 m of the polar snowpack (firn) shows anomalous enrichment of heavy gases during summer, including inert gases. Following earlier work, we ascribe this to thermal diffusion, the tendency of a gas mixture to separate in a temperature gradient, with heavier molecules migrating toward colder regions. Summer warmth creates a temperature gradient in the t...

Impurity-controlled densification: a new model for stratified polar firn

A new densification model, which simulates the effect of impurities on the densification of polar firn, is presented. The classical densification models of Herron and Langway (1980) and Pimienta and Barnola (Barnola and others, 1991) are modified by assuming that the activation energy for deformation is reduced by the impurities. Motivated by recent observations, the impurity effect is formulat...
